Ukrainian Frequency

Ukrainian has almost no serious digital tooling for learners. So I started building it. Thread one is a lemma-based frequency list: 12,000 lemmas ranked over 1.5 billion word tokens, with coverage curves that show exactly how slowly reading comprehension accrues in a heavily inflected language. Published as versioned CSV, JSON, and an Anki deck. CC-BY, open for anyone to build on. https://www.jakelawrence.xyz/research/ukrainian-frequency

Heavy inflection means coverage accrues slowly. Ukrainian has almost no learner tooling that accounts for this. So I built a lemma-based frequency list: 12,000 lemmas, ranked over 1.5 billion tokens, with the coverage curves to prove it.

Ukrainian has almost no serious digital tooling for learners. Thread one of an open effort to fix that: a lemma-based frequency list, 12,000 lemmas ranked over 1.5 billion word tokens. The coverage curves are the interesting part. They make visible exactly how slowly reading comprehension builds in a heavily inflected language. Out as versioned CSV, JSON, and an Anki deck. CC-BY.

Ukrainian has almost no serious digital tooling for learners. I started building it. Thread one is a lemma-based frequency list: 12,000 lemmas ranked over 1.5 billion word tokens. The most non-obvious output isn't the list itself, it's the coverage curves. They show empirically how slowly reading comprehension accrues when a language inflects as heavily as Ukrainian does. That's the kind of thing a learner needs to know before they build a study plan. Published as versioned, hashed CSV and JSON, plus an Anki deck. Coverage curves for Ukrainian show the hard truth: heavy inflection means the vocabulary climb is steeper than most learners expect. Built a 12,000-lemma frequency list over 1.5B tokens to make that concrete.

The vocabulary climb in Ukrainian is steeper than most learners expect. Heavy inflection is why. A 12,000-lemma frequency list over 1.5B tokens, with coverage curves that make it empirically visible. CC-BY, versioned CSV, JSON, and Anki deck. jakelawrence.xyz/research/ukrainian-frequency
